권기철 초대전 <KWON KI CHUL>     고된 노동의 계절을 이겨내고 마주하게 되는 황금 들녘.   이 계절처럼 고뇌의 흔적으로 풍요로운 결실을 맺은 권기철 작가의 작품 세계로 여러분들을 초대하고자 합니다.     어린 시절 사고로 인해 조금 불편한 손을 지니게 되었지만 화가로서의 그 열정을 멈추지 않은 작가 권기철. 내면의 강한 응집을 한 순간에 표출시키듯 표현한 먹 작업은 인고의 세월을 투영한 것이고 그 고통의 시간들마저 사람들로 인해 풍요로운 미래를 가슴에 품을 수 있지 않았을까하는 생각이 듭니다.   권기철 작품이 매력적인 이유는 어떠한 고통 속에서도 아름다운 꿈을 꾸고, 희망을 버리지 않는 무모할지도 모르는 열정을 지니고 있기 때문이죠.   바쁘시더라도 함께 참석하시어 자리를 빛내주시기 바랍니다.                                                                                                대구보건대학교 총장   남 성 희           A Golden field, overcoming and facing the season of hard labor. 권기철의 회화
존재와 세계가 공명하는 소리
 

 
 
   태초에 말씀이 있었다. 여기서 말씀은 곧 신이며 로고스였고 이성이었다. 태초에 신은 이런 말씀 곧 소리로 창조했다(소리창세신화는 기독교 말고도 여럿 있다). 그러므로 말씀과 신, 말씀과 소리, 로고스와 이성은 처음부터 하나였다. 그 소리는 말하자면 존재에 내재된 존재내 소리(생명? 생명의 원인? 존재의 원인?)이며 우주 저편으로부터 유래한 우주의 소리였다. 그런 만큼 말씀과 소리와 음악은 처음부터 감각과는 거리가 먼 것이었고, 차라리 이성(아님 신성?)에 가까운 것이었다. 그래서 음악은 오랫동안 감각적인 예술보다는 이성적인 수학에 가까운 것으로 여겨졌다. 하나의 동기가 반복 변주되는, 점진적이로 잦아들었다가 점진적으로 확장되는, 그리고 그렇게 점차 클라이맥스를 향해 내달리는 과정에서의 규칙과 비례(비율?)의 엄밀성에 주목한 탓이리라.
그렇게 음악 자체는 비록 수학적 엄밀성의 소산이지만, 정작 그렇게 만들어진 음악이 사람들에게 전달되는 과정에서는 이성과는 거리가 먼 감각적 쾌를 유발한다. 응어리를 풀어헤치는 카타르시스 효과를 불러일으키는 것이다. 그리고 그렇게 음악은 재차 예술의 한 분과로서 편입될 수 있었고, 감각적 대상성을 획득할 수가 있었다. 음악과 관련한 이런 저간의 사정은 뭘 말해주는가. 음악은 이성과 감성, 승화와 정화, 지적 고양감과 감각적 쾌, 그리고 여기에 에토스와 파토스를 하나로 통합해 들이는 종합의 기능이 있다. 공자에게도 음악은 지고의 쾌(음악은 고기 맛도 잊게 만든다)이면서 동시에 최고의 덕목(음악으로 인격이 완성된다)을 의미했다. 상호간 이질적인 지점 지점들을 하나로 어우러지게 한, 이런 종합의 능력이며 기능을 칸트 식으로 말하자면 오성이 되겠고, 이는 화음 곧 오케스트라에서 확인하는 그대로이다.

 
   권기철은 이런 화음을 그리고 음악을 그리고 소리를 그린다. 정색을 하고 말하자면 소리는 그리는 것이 아니라 듣는 것이다. 그렇다면 소리를 그린다는 것은 무슨 의미인가. 바로 공감각을 실현한다는 것이다. 공감각? 표면적으로 감각은 저마다 다르지만, 사실은 그 이면에서 하나로 통한다고 보는 것. 주지하다시피 이런 공감각에의 인식은 칸딘스키와 폴 클레 같은, 그림과 함께 음악에도 조예가 깊었던 작가들로 하여금 추상미술을 발상케 한 계기가 된다. 단언할 수는 없지만, 대개 소리를 이미지로 번안하는 과정은 작가의 경우에서처럼 구상이나 형상보다는 상대적으로 추상미술과 어울린다. 이러저런 예술장르 중 음악이 가장 추상적인 장르랄 수 있겠고(물론 일부 표제음악과 같은 서사적인 내용을 담고 있는 경우가 없지 않지만, 대개는). 그 추상적 장르에 추상적 형식이 어울린다는 말이다. 아무래도 음악은 서사적인 내용의 전개보다는 형식논리에 치중하기 마련이고, 이는 그대로 점, 선, 면, 색채, 양감, 질감과 같은 형식요소에서 회화의 당위성을 찾은 모더니즘 패러다임과도 통한다. 정리를 하자면, 고도로 추상적 형식의 음악(흔히 표제음악과 비교해 순수음악 내지는 절대음악으로 알려진)과 모더니즘 패러다임의 형식주의 그리고 추상미술이 공감각을 매개로 하나로 통한다고 보면 되겠다.
그렇다면 음악 혹은 소리는 언제 어떻게 권기철의 그림 속으로 들어오게 되었고, 이런 소리의 이미지화는 어떤 의미를 갖는가. 일차적으론 음악과 관련한 작가의 경험이 바탕이 된 것 같다. 이를테면 작가는 꽤 오랫동안 특정 오케스트라를 위한 기관지 삽화와 공연 포스터를 그리는 일을 했었다. 당시 작가의 그림은 자연스레 바이올린과 첼로 연주자와 같은 구상적이고 형상적인, 그리고 나아가 반구상적인 그림을 아우르는 것이지만, 그 자체 본격적인 경우로서보다는 일종의 예비단계로 보아야하지 않을까 싶다. 이런 경험도 있지만, 기본적으론 작가 개인의 타고난 자질이며 감성으로 보아야 하지 않을까. 작가는 말하자면 유독 소리에 민감한 감각을 가졌고, 이를 바탕으로 작가에게 소리는 마침내 다른 감각경험을 길러내는 채가 되기에 이른 것 같다. 그래서 작가에게 소리는 일상(이를테면 존 케이지의 경우에서와 같은 일상음, 우연음, 채집음, 자연음과 같은)을, 자연(물아일체의 경지를 매개하는 소리)을, 우주(존재와 우주가 공명하는 소리)를, 내면을, 그리고 종래에는 존재 자체를 암시하고 상기하고 의미하기에 이른 것 같다. 그래서 모든 일상적인 경험을 소리로 감지하고, 그림을 매개로 그렇게 감지된 소리를 이미지로 옮겨 그리는 일에 통달한 것 같다.
 

   그렇게 작가의 그림은 형상을 빌려 소리를 이미지화하던 것에서 점차 소리 자체의 추상성에 주목하고, 이를 추상 형식을 빌려 표현하는 것으로, 말하자면 추상적인 소리를 추상적인 그림으로 표현하는 것으로 이행한다. 그렇게 그려진 그림은 한눈에도 드로잉의 분방함을 보는 것 같고, 거침없는 붓질의 난무를 보는 것 같다. 튀고 흩뿌린 물감자국이 여실하고, 맺히면서 흘러내린 아님 흘러내리다 맺힌 붓질자국이 선연하다. 물감자국이며 붓질 스스로 저마다의 길을 내고 물꼬를 트면서 그린 그림(회화의 내재율? 회화의 자율성?)같고, 즉각성과 즉발성과 즉흥성이 그린 그림(몸에 밴 것이 우연하게 터져 나온?)같다. 먹의 본성이 자기를 실현한 그림 같고, 색의 본성이 스스로를 구현한 것 같다. 먹의 본성? 색의 본성? 먹이 자율성을 획득하고 색이 자족성을 구현한 어떤 경지? 차원? 작가는 한동안 수묵화운동에 동참해 그 형식실험에 열심인 적이 있었고, 그 여파는 지금도 그리고 앞으로도 그림의 양분이 되어줄 것이다. 주지하다시피 수묵화운동은 그림의 당위를 처음으로 그리고 원점으로 되돌려 놓는 태도로 귀결된다. 그 무언가를 표현하기 위한 구실이며 도구로서가 아니라, 수묵 자체의, 먹 자체의, 붓질 자체의 본성을 추구하는 태도이며, 그 태도 자체로 하여금 그림이 되게 하는 방식으로 모아진다.
다시, 그렇게 그려진 그림은 의식이 그린 그림이라기보다는 잠재의식 내지 무의식이 직접적으로 표출된 것 같고, 몸이 이끄는 대로 그린 그림 같다. 몸이 이끄는 대로 그린 그림? 바로 몸 그림이다. 보기에 따라서 작가의 그림은 추상표현주의의 먹그림 버전을 보는 것 같다. 그리고 추상표현주의는 다르게는 액션페인팅이라고도 한다. 액션페인팅? 다시, 바로 몸 그림이라는 말이다. 생체리듬, 바로 바이오리듬을 따라 그린 그림이다. 작가는 바로 몸 그림을 그리고 있었고, 생물학적인 그림을 그리고 있었다. 꿀꿀한, 달뜬, 우울한, 들뜬, 무겁게 가라앉은, 가볍게 부유하는, 빠른, 느린, 가쁜, 깊은, 내면적인, 표면적인, 진중한, 촐싹거리는, 무뚝뚝한, 까불거리는 것과 같은 변덕이 죽 끓듯 하는 게 바이오리듬이고, 그 꼴이 꼭 변덕이 심해 종잡을 수가 없는 기후 같고 날씨 같다. 작가는 그런 바이오리듬을 그리고 있었다. 그 말 속에 리듬이 들어있다. 변덕이 바로 리듬이다. 높낮이가 있고, 변주가 있고, 주기가 있는 것. 이런 사실을 의식하면서 그림을 보면 불현 듯 그림 속에서 소리가 들린다. 먹물과 먹물, 붓 자국과 붓 자국, 색깔과 색깔이 서로 어우러지면서 음악이 흐른다. 무겁게 가라앉는 소리와 가볍게 뜨는 소리, 부드럽게 감싸는 소리와 날카롭게 찌르는 소리, 내달리는 소리와 정체된 소리, 긴박한 소리와 느슨한 소리가 어우러져서 화음을 만든다. 그렇게 그림 속에서 봄의 제전이 폭발하고 레퀴엠이 깔린다.
 

   작가의 그림은 한눈에도 에너지가 넘치고 기의 흐름이 원활한 편이다. 전통적으로 한국화의 덕목으로 알려진 기운생동이 감지되고, 특히 운이 두드러진 편이다. 그리고 알다시피 운은 운율 내지는 리듬감과 깊고, 소리(생명이 약동하는 소리? 존재와 우주가 공명하는 소리?)를 이미지로 옮기는 작가의 기획과도 통한다.
이외에도 전통적으로 먹그림은 필과 선과 준이 핵심이다. 그리고 특히 작가의 경우에 필과 선과 준은 그림만큼이나 오랜 경륜을 가지고 있는 서예와 전각에 대한 이해 없이는 불가능하다. 먹그림에서의 선과 필과 준이 서체와 하나로 통하는 것이다. 이처럼 작가는 자신만의 고요한 준을 얻기 위해 진력해온 편인데, 그렇게 얻어진 것이 이른바 채찍준이며 아미준이고 전각준으로 부를 수가 있겠다. 조어 곧 인위적으로 만든 말이지만, 작가의 그림에 나타난 준이 마치 채찍을 휘두른 자국 같고, 눈썹 같고, 돌을 소재로 한 전각에서 칼이 지나간 가장자리를 따라 터실터실하게 깨져나간 자국이 선연하기에 붙여본 것이다. 그럼 이런 독특한 준은 어떻게 얻어진 것인가. 작가는 플라스틱 먹물 통을 붓 대신 사용한다. 일정한 각도를 유지하면서 먹물 통을 화면에 대고 선을 그으면 들린 각도 쪽으로 먹물이 튀겨지면서 이런 독특한 준이 만들어진다. 한 번에 그려야 하기 때문에 정신집중과 호흡조절은 필수다. 순간적으로 그린 것인 만큼 준에 실어 보낸 호흡이 생생하게 전달되는 그림이다.
여기서 준은 서양화의 논법으로 치자면 드로잉에 해당한다. 이와 관련해 작가의 그림에서 두드러진 특징으로 치자면 드로잉과 타블로의 구별이 무의미하다는 것이고, 그런 만큼 드로잉에서 타블로로 그리고 타블로에서 드로잉으로 자유자재로 이행되고 있는 점이다. 결국 드로잉 타블로 할 것 없이 드로잉이 두드러져 보인다는 것인데, 상대적이긴 하지만 드로잉은 타블로에 비해 표현의 직접성이 특징이다. 의식이 지배를 받지 않은 무의식의 직접적인 표현을 겨냥한 초현실주의의 자동기술법과도 일정부분 통하는 대목으로서, 작가의 경우에는 그 표현이 무의식이나 억압된 욕망의 서사적 표현으로서보다는 순수한 추상형식을 띠고 있는 점이 다르다. 그리고 그 순수형식이 어우러져서 소리를, 화음을, 생명을, 호흡을, 그리고 무엇보다도 행위의 흔적을 떠올려준다는 점이 다르다.
이렇게 작가의 그림은 먹그림이 시작되는 회화의 원점으로, 그리고 특히 모든 감각경험이 소리라는 하나의 채로 걸러진 어떤 차원이며 경지로 초대한다. 당신의 귀에도 선으로 환원되고 색깔로 환치된, 존재와 세계가 공명하는 소리가 들리는가.

   There existed words in the beginning. Here, the words were God and reason. In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth with these words, namely sounds (many religions including Christianity have myths of creation with sounds). Therefore, words and God, words and sounds, and logos and reason were one from the beginning.
Speaking of the sounds, they were sounds inherent in existence (life? cause of life? cause of existence?) and sounds of the universe originated from far in the distance of the universe. As such, words, sounds and music were different than senses from the beginning and rather they were close to reason (or sacredness?). Music has been regarded as something not so much art based on senses as math based on reason because in music, a motive is played repeatedly and through variations, gradually dies down and eventually expands and then starts to dart off to reach a climax, and in this process, people pay attention to strictness of rules and proportion.
Though music itself is a product of mathematical strictness, it causes sensory pleasures that are quite different from reason in the process it is delivered to people: it causes catharsis effects getting rid of resentment. This way, music was integrated into art as a branch and could obtain nature of sensory objects. What do these circumstances related to music tell us? Music plays a comprehensive role of integrating reason, emotions, sublimation, purification,
intellectual boost, emotional pleasure and adding ethos  and pathos  to them. Even to Confucius, music meant supreme pleasures (Music even makes you forget the taste of meat) and at the same time, the best virtue (Music completes one's character). Music has such a comprehensive ability to mingle mutually different points into one. In Kant's way, such a comprehensive ability is wisdom and chord that is verified at orchestra.

 

   Kichul Kwon draws this chord, music and sounds. To be accurate, sounds are not something you draw but something you listen to. Then, what does drawing sounds mean? It means realizing synesthesia. Synesthesia? It means, on surface, senses are all different but they are integrated into one in the hidden side. As is generally known, awareness in such synesthesia served as a chance for artists such as Kandinski and Paul Klee who had profound knowledge of paintings as well as music to produce abstract art. I can’t say for sure, but typically, the process of converting sounds into image goes relatively better with abstract art than concept or shape as is in the case of the artist. Music is the most abstract genre among all art genres (of course, some music contains descriptive stories like program music but most of the time, it does), and what I mean is an abstract form goes well with such an abstract genre. Somehow,
music tends to focus on formal logic rather than on development of stories, which has something in common with modernism that found appropriateness of paintings from elements of forms such as dots, lines, sides, colors, sense of volume and texture. In summary, music in the highly abstract form (also known as fine music or absolute music
compared to program music), formalism of modernism paradigm and abstract art have something in common through the medium of synesthesia.
Then, when and how did music or sounds come into Kichul Kwon's  paintings  and what does the image of such sounds mean? Primarily, it seems his experiences in music has something to do with it. For example, the artist had a
job of drawing illustration for art journals  and performance posters. Back  then, his works naturally included concrete, formative and semi-concrete paintings  such as  drawing of violinists and cellists but I think these works should be considered a preliminary stage rather than his major works. Not only this  experience but basically his personal attributes he was born with and his emotions are attributable to the integration of music into paintings. As it was said,
the artist has senses uniquely sensitive to sounds and based on that, it seems, to him, sounds became a sifter that filters  out the other sensory experiences. So, to him, sounds seem to imply, recall and mean everyday  (like every day sounds, accidental sounds, gathering sounds in the case of John Cage), nature (sounds that lead to a realm of integration with external objects), the universe (sounds  where existence and the universe resonate), inner side and ultimately existence itself. That is why he seems to be highly proficient in detecting daily experiences through sounds and convert the sounds into image by the medium of paintings.

 

   As  such, the artist's  paintings  started to be attentive to abstractness  of sounds  themselves  going beyond converting sounds  into image by  borrowing shapes. In other words, he expresses  abstract sounds  in the form of abstract paintings. It is obvious at first glance that looking at the paintings drawn that way is like looking at drawing's wildness and rampage of feisty strokes with a brush. Splashed and scattered paint stains are clear and stains of strokes with a brush that were formed before running down or ran down before being formed are vivid. It seems painting stains and the strokes create their own paths and open up roads to draw the paintings (paintings' rhythm? paintings autonomy?) and it also seems  instantaneity, promptness and spontaneity  drew the paintings (what he was  accustomed to seemed to be outpoured by accident?). It seems like nature of ink stick realized itself and nature of colors materialized themselves. Nature of ink  stick? Nature of colors? A realm or a level where ink  stick  obtains  autonomy  and colors realize self-sufficiency? Once the artist joined the ink-and-wash painting movement and was eager to experiment the form, and the efforts nourish and will nourish his paintings. As everyone knows, the ink-and-wash painting movement boils down to an attitude that makes what a painting should be go back to the starting point. It is an attitude to pursue nature of the India ink, nature of the ink stick and nature of strokes with a brush, not a pretext or a tool to express something. It is the way the attitude itself becomes a painting.
Again, the paintings drawn that way seem like direct expression of sub-consciousness or unconsciousness and paintings seem to be drawn as the body leads rather than drawn by one's sense. Paintings drawn as the body leads?
They  are body  paintings. In a certain sense, his  paintings  look  like contour picture versions drawn in Indian ink of abstract expressionism. And Abstract expressionism is  also known as  action paintings. Action paintings? Again, they
are body paintings. They are drawn according to biorhythms. The artist was  drawing body  paintings  and biological paintings.  Being  melancholy, depressed,  excited, glum, buoyant, fast, slow, light, deep, internal, superficial, serious immodest, blunt, imprudent and capricious is biorhythms and the biorhythm is so capricious and unpredictable that it is like mixed weather. The artist was drawing such biorhythm. There was rhythm in the words. A caprice is the rhythm.
There is a high and a low. There is a variation and there is a cycle. If you look at his paintings in a way of being aware of this, you will start hearing sounds out of the paintings all of a sudden. India ink and India ink, marks of a brush and
marks of a brush and colors and colors mixed together to play music. Heavily sinking sounds, buoyant sounds, softly wrapping sounds, piercing sounds, darting  sounds, stagnant sounds, urgent sounds and loose sounds  all  mingle together to create a chord. As such, a festival of spring explodes in the paintings and requiem is played.

 

   His paintings are energetic and show smooth flow of energy. Cheerfulness and vividness traditionally known as virtues of Korean paintings are sensed and especially, luck stands out in his paintings. As you may well know, luck is deeply related to cadence or rhythm, which has something in common with the artist's planning that converts sounds (sounds of life full of energy? sounds where existence and the universe resonate?) into image.
Besides, traditionally  contour pictures drawn in India ink are all about style, lines and dimensions. And especially, in the case of the artist, his paintings would have not been drawn without understanding calligraphy and seal engraving that he has  long experiences in as well as style, lines and dimensions. As such, the artist has  done his utmost to achieve his own dimensions, which has generated the so-called whip-dimensions and dimensions of a long- slender eyebrow. Coined words, in other words, the words are created artificially but dimensions demonstrated in his paintings are as if they are wale of whips and eyebrows because marks of stones coarsely broken along the edge the graver past are vivid in the seal engraving made of stones. Then, how were such unique dimensions obtained?
The artist uses a plastic India ink basket instead of a brush. If you keep the ink basket at a certain angle and draw a line on canvas with the basket, the India ink splashes into the angle where the basket is raised. Here, concentration and breath control are necessary because this should be drawn at once. As such a painting is drawn in an instant, it delivers the breath transferred through the dimensions vividly.
Here, dimensions are equivalent to drawing in the technique of western paintings. Characteristics that set his paintings apart from others  are that it is  meaningless  to distinguish drawing from art displayed in a frame in his  paintings.
After all, without distinguishing drawing or art displayed in a frame, drawing stands out. Drawing has a characteristic of having relatively more immediate expression compared to art displayed in a frame. This  is  partly  something in
common with automatism of surrealism that targets immediate expression of unconsciousness  that is  not ruled by consciousness. The artist's paintings  are different from others in that such expression is not so much descriptive expression of unconsciousness or suppressed  desires as pure abstract forms.  And,  the  pure  forms  are  mixed together to remind us of sounds, chords, life, breath and, more than anything else, traces of acts.
As such, his paintings invite us to the starting point of paintings where contour pictures drawn in India ink begin and especially, to a level and a realm where all sensory experiences are filtered out through a sifter of sounds.
